Visions in Action (VIA) is looking for families to host high school students aged between 15 and 18 and their teachers from French-speaking West and Central Africa as part of a youth leadership and international exchange program supported by the State Department. The participants have been carefully selected by the Public Affairs sections of the various United States embassies, and represent the best in their countries. The 20 participants this fall are from Mauritania and Burkina Faso, and will be in the Washington DC area for 3 weeks, from March 5 to March 26, 2011.
The participants will take part in workshops on American civics, visits to the Capitol, the U.S. Supreme Court and the Smithsonian museums, and undertake community service projects. A four day trip to Monticello and Williamsburg, VA is planned, so participants will stay with their host families for 17 of their 21 days in the U.S.VIA is offering hosts the opportunity to share American values with the participants and complement their experience in American culture, beliefs, and practices. The host families have a unique chance to contribute to cross-cultural understanding. Although the host families will not be compensated, participants will receive stipends, and should thus not be a financial burden on host families.
The host family is expected to provide a sleeping area and expose the participants to American life. The host family should also be able to get participants to a metro or bus stop on weekday mornings, and get participants from a metro or bus stop to the family home in the evening, at least until participants can get around on their own. It would be ideal for a family to host 2 participants at a time, as this makes transportation arrangements and communication easier. Participants generally spend weekends with the host family.
VIA prefers families that live in Washington DC or the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia, ideally not far from a metro stop. Host families will fill out a short application.
Our host families can be single or two-parent households, with or without children, or singles. The participants are primarily French-speaking, and will have completed basic English-language courses run by the United States embassies. VIA has bilingual staff as well as interpreters to facilitate communication where necessary.
Interested families should contact Samuel Bong or Kadiatou Diallo at exchange@visionsinaction.org or by phone at (202) 625-7402.
